Yamaha TDM 850cc bike was perhaps the first road-oriented 'Adventure Sports' motorcycle, designed as a comfortable all round sports tourer, rather than an off-road bike, which it was too big and heavy for. The engine was inspired by the Yamaha XTZ750 which won the Paris-Dakar race. The upright riding position was a new innovation in its day. In 1996 it gained a new look, new engine and chassis modifications with which it garnered many followers! In 2001 the TDM 900 DOHC parallel-twin came along for the ride.
