Dustbin Ducati
Wilcox Metal
John Newman
Not 'dustbin' as we would normally refer, but the fairing kind that metal fabricator, Evan Wilcox, crafts. He works out of a place called Ukiah, in California. Not exactly handy for UK customers, but we thought the work on this bike - and other examples - were so exceptional and unconventional that Wemoto News readers would readily appreciate it.
It's a 1959 Ducati 175cc single, and Wilcox has modelled it after the Grand Prix racers that carried this type of streamlining. Dustbin fairings were banned at the end of the 50s because of their propensity to lift and make the front wheel dangerously light in cross winds.
All the metal work is hand beaten and the front fairing consists of a single sheet of aluminium. He typically spends 40/50 hours working on a single tank, which goes a long way to explaining why he is in demand and always has a backlog of work.
His
website lists a range of hand fabricated tanks and other accessories to adorn a range of British, German and Italian bikes. This Ducati single is due to be auctioned soon and is expected to raise between $10,000 - $14,000. Not a lot for the amount of hours that has gone into creating this piece of moving sculpture. Though the bike is only a small capacity single, it would surely gain a lot of attention for the owner at classic shows and classic track days.
