A2 Choices
Manufacturers increase model options for young riders
John Newman
The A2 motorcycle licence is part of the regulatory approach whereby riders have to progress through a series of tests if they want to sling a leg over a bike that is going to transport them further and faster.
The
A2 stage can be reached by people aged 19 -20 who already hold a CBT. Until they reach this age and stage they'll have been restricted to riding 50ccs (at the age of 16) and 125ccs (from ages 17-18).
Once an A2 licence is obtained, they are then entitled to ride bikes delivering power up to 47bhp; models such as Honda NC700, BMW G650GS, Kawasaki Z800e.
But now, more manufacturers are set to provide models that are A2 compliant, with Suzuki providing A2 'friendly' power for new SV650s and the DL650 V-Strom. Yamaha will do the same with its new MT07-derived Ténéré model, opening up another option for newly enfranchised riders to become 'proper' motorcyclists.
After a slow start in responding to the new licencing regulations, it seems as if manufacturers are increasing the number of A2 options and models, which can only be a positive step in attracting younger riders towards the two-wheel life.

27/04/16 Don't forget the Honda CB500 models (R,F and X). Cracking bikes for any biker but still A2 compatible.
